TIME TO THRIVE!
Creating a World for Solo Mothers and Our Families
One in five children in Canada are from solo parent families, 80% of which are headed by mothers. So why are we overlooked?
We dream of a world…
… that sees, respects, includes and supports solo mothers and our families.

Build community
Sign up for our newsletter, listen to our podcast, and share our work with others: researchers, policymakers, advocates, media, social service providers, employers, but most importantly parents.
More hands make light work. If you have skills, expertise, and time (I know, we are hilarious), tell us what and how much you can contribute. We always need help with fundraising and communications, design, social media, and promotion.
Have a say
Our work is rooted in the lived experiences of solo mothers of all types. Have something to say? Send us a voice memo, email us through our website, or tag us on socials. And subscribe to our newsletter, where we solicit input on specific topics. We want your views on the issues we are already speaking out about, and your ideas about new topics we need to address.
Whether you are a solo mother or not, our interests may align, and we are stronger together. Reach out to discuss co-producing a podcast episode or joining forces to carry out policy research.
Support our work
As solo mothers, we already do more than our fair share of unpaid work. We would love to be able to compensate the brilliant mothers who are labouring with Time to Thrive! to make our world better for all families, so contribute if you can.
How we began
Hi, I am Rochelle Johnston (she/her), the convenor of Time to Thrive!
Time to Thrive! is rooted in lived experience: my own journey as a solo mother, my relationships with diverse mothers raising children with limited or no support from another parent, and my lifelong commitment to accompanying communities facing systemic oppression. As I have started to share my experiences and listen in awe to other solo mothers and their children, solo motherhood has emerged as a pressing matter of equity and care.
While I have convened Time to Thrive! I won’t raise another child alone. Please join with me in conceiving, birthing and nurturing a better world, for us all, together.
Solo mothers are a norm. We hold families together, nurture children, and contribute to our communities and the economy under immense strain. It’s time we are seen, treated fairly, included, and valued. It’s time we thrived!
